This psychophysical study investigated the ability of humans to discriminate between two movement speeds of a limb. Specifically, the experiment determined the just noticeable difference threshold (JNDT) for passive forearm motion in a group of young, healthy, right-handed adults (N = 30). Without vision, participants rested their arms on a padded splint, which was passively moved by a torque motor causing either elbow flexion or extension. The paradigm consisted of two fixed staircase procedures with a step size of 0.1 deg/s. Difference thresholds were computed for two standard velocities (fast: 1.15 deg/s; slow: 0.6 deg/s). The range of comparison velocities was 0.1∼1.1 deg/s for the slow condition and 0.65∼1.65 deg/s for the fast condition. Two JNDTs were determined to be the difference between the standard and a comparison velocity (Δ stim) when a probability of 75% or 50% correct response was achieved. The main findings of the study are as follows: First, in the slow condition, the thresholds were 0.4 deg/s for both elbow flexion and extension. In the fast condition, the threshold was 0.50 deg/s in elbow extension. However, 40% of the subjects did not reach a 75% correct response level in elbow flexion. This implies that the JNDT for the fast condition was beyond the largest tested stimulus difference of 0.5 deg/s. Based on extrapolation of the derived sensitivity function, JNDT was estimated to be 0.76 deg/s in elbow flexion. Second, kinesthetic acuity to detect the difference between angular velocities increased linearly in both fast and slow conditions. The slope was 1.35%/deg·s-1 for the slow condition and 0.92%/deg·s -1 for the fast condition. Third, the JNDTs were velocity dependent, meaning that subjects were more sensitive to detect the difference between angular velocities during the lower standard velocity (0.6 deg/s). The study provides evidence that the ability to discriminate between angular velocities was dependent on the standard velocity. The JNDTs were elevated with the higher standard velocity (1.15 deg/s), compared to the lower one (0.6 deg/s). The data show a directional difference in discriminating between angular velocities with the fast condition only. As the difference between angular velocities increased, kinesthetic acuity increased linearly.
