The integration of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) and multimedia has become a popular area of research in higher education and in the context of English language teaching and learning. The problem addressed in this study was that English as a second language (ESL) teachers encounter barriers and challenges in integrating ICTs and multimedia in language teaching. ICT integration in education is influenced by various factors' barriers and enablers. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand teachers' perceptions of possible barriers and challenges integrating ICTs and multimedia into their teaching at a university in Qatar. The theoretical framework of the present study was based on self-determination theory. Three research questions were the focus of this study: (a) What motivates teachers to integrate ICT and multimedia into classroom teaching? (b) What issues do teachers view as barriers and challenges to ICT integration in the instructional practices of language teaching? and (c) What are teachers' perceptions of how their views affect the use of ICT when teaching language skills? Participants included a purposive sample of six ESL instructors who participated in semi-structured interviews. The perspectives of the ESL instructors were analyzed using inductive thematic coding to gain a basic understanding of the phenomenon. Data included interview transcripts from the participants, course syllabi, and field notes as a method of data triangulation. The three themes that emerged from the data were (a) teachers' motivations; (b) barriers and challenges; and (c) teachers' views of the use of ICTs and multimedia and the impact on students' language skills. Teachers described their perceptions of the barriers and challenges to integrating ICTs and multimedia in teaching and learning. They also shared their experiences and suggestions to improve technology-integrated learning environments. It was evident that teachers must overcome barriers and challenges in the integration of ICTs and multimedia in their teaching practices. Implications of this study are relevant for university administrators and educational practitioners in making decisions to improve technological and curricular environments and to cooperate with each other to overcome barriers and challenges in the integration of ICTs and multimedia in teaching ESL.
