With an increasing immigrant population through various government policies, schools are experiencing a surge in English as a Second Language (ESL) students. The problem addressed by this study was that while the federal government mandates public schools to aid ESL students, it does not provide schools a paradigm to operate its policies, instructions, progress, and to identify ESL needs. This qualitative phenomenological study aimed to examine the lived experiences of ESL students from different ethnic backgrounds at International High School (IHS). The conceptual framework for this qualitative phenomenological study was Schumann's acculturation model. The theory of acculturation is a developmental process for a person or cultural group to accept and embrace the values and norms of a new culture, all the while maintaining their native identity. The researcher chose the phenomenological design for this qualitative method as the most relevant path to understanding the experiences of a small group of former ESL students. The population sample in this study was 32 former IHS ESL students. From the screening survey, 10 final participants were selected for the research study. Overall, this qualitative phenomenological study revealed that students found IHS a welcoming school, and many have associated IHS with home. This research study identified four recommendations for practice. Specific recommendations were to (1) develop a judgment-free environment where ESL students feel comfortable with making mistakes and asking questions, (2) strengthen policies that administrations support and collaborate with students, (3) strategize of teaching the English language and subject matter content to aid in ESL students' academic success, and (4) develop inclusive cultural activities with all enrolled students.
