Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong), 2019.
There are more and more examples prove that globalization in the aspects of political, economical and cultural areas has promoted integration between nation states and regions. However, it also leads to the rise of nativisim due to the profound impacts on the ordinary lives of the locals. It should be noted that globalization is a political, economical and cultural process that deterritorialization and reterritorialization occur simultaneously. The process of the globalization of Hong Kong is a special case all over the world. It is because the sovereignty of Hong Kong was transferred from the United Kingdom to China in 1997, which made the process of globalization of Hong Kong deeply influenced by the later. The form changed from global modernity in the West to global modernity in China. The question is: How do the Hong Kong, with the process of globalization is deeply influenced by the Chinese factors, produce the locality or networked nativism in the network society, and what kind of locality or networked nativism is made? Through the method of network ethnography, I have screened out several topics that have long been paid attention to by netizens in the network society, including real estate hegemony, Hong Kong-style Cantonese, anti-locust discourse, 'Hong Kong spirit', and with the related digital creative works as research objects. I would like to employ the concept of re-territorialization to cut into the discussion of network nativism. On the whole, network nativitism could be defined as following: It is in the process of (Sino-) Hong Kong global modernity, the Hong Kong people who claim themselves as lower class, stand firm on the rejection of Sino-Hong Kong integration, but not successfully to get rid of the entanglement of China, while at the same time holding the patriarchal position that they imagined in the past when they encountered China, by reterritorializing locality through the production and releasing of the individual or collective digital creative works, try to remake Hong Kong identity and community by digitalizing Hong Kong in the virtual world.
