The purpose of this study was to explore and understand parents' experiences using augmentative and alternative communication with their children diagnosed with autism. Previously conducted research disclosed a need for further research to understand parents' experiences using augmentative and alternative communication. The specific research question addressed in this study was: What are parents' experiences utilizing augmentative and alternative communication with their children diagnosed with autism? A generic qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews was used to complete this study. Those designed to information on beliefs toward augmentative and alternative communication, experiences communicating with their children with and without augmentative and alternative communication, how the parents learned to use these communication means, and their thoughts after using said communication. This study sought to expand the understanding of knowledge of augmentative and alternative communication systems and the parents' experiences in using them with their children. The results of the data analysis suggested that parents valued having augmentative and alternative communication for their children but struggled with limited support and training on how to use augmentative and alternative communication.
