Background: Childhood obesity rates continue to escalate with each new decade. At the same time, the onset of obesity is debuting at an earlier age. Growing evidence shows that early intervention in the establishment of dietary behaviors may be vital to the long-term health status of school children. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the nutrition knowledge of individuals who care for children of preschool age, the self-attitude of these individuals towards the importance of nutrition, the dietary behaviors of these individuals, and their perceived influence on the nutrition knowledge and attitude of the preschool-aged children they care for. Methods: Participants for this study were childcare providers employed at multiple childcare centers in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Each participant completed an anonymous study-specific questionnaire that included a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Questions assessed nutrition knowledge, perceived influence on nutrition of children in their care, and frequency of food groups consumption. Results: The participants comprised 62 individuals from three childcare centers in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The age of participants ranged from 18 years-old to 62 years-old. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that childcare providers have adequate nutrition knowledge, have adequate intake and believe they influence the intake of children in their care.
