The provision of hospice cares services is growing in many settings but specifically in long-term care. With the growing population of clients' receiving hospice care in long-term care, there is a need for initial and ongoing education of facility nursing staff on this topic in order to provide the highest quality of care. A lack of adequate training and knowledge may lead to adverse outcomes for patients. The goal of this research is to identify the knowledge and training gaps for nurses providing hospice care in long-term care facilities in two Midwestern long-term care facilities. A qualitative survey with demographic information was provided to facility staff regarding their existing training on hospice care as well areas of desired continuing education. Phone interviews were conducted with educational leaders at both facilities. Results revealed 71% (n = 15) of the participants from Facility A and B had received previous training on hospice care but 100% (n = 21) of the participants identified areas of continued education related to hospice care. These themes included end of life care and symptom management, communication and collaboration, and hospice philosophy. The primary methods of previous education included video-based learning and in-person training. The desired method of training was experiential based learning. In conclusion, gaps in current training curriculum process were identified in both facilities. Further research is needed to identify facility-specific training needs and identification of specific training methods to ensure competence and confidence in nurses providing care and to ensure client's receiving hospice care receive the highest standard of care.
