The coparenting alliance is both an important relationship and potential risk mechanism that predicts child and family outcomes, thereby making it a central target for therapeutic intervention (Feinberg, 2002, 2003; Feinberg et al., 2012). There is preliminary evidence to suggest that the reflective function, the capacity to identify mental states in oneself and others in an interpersonal context, may improve the coparenting alliance (Jesse et al., 2018). The current study examined the relationship between the reflective function and the coparenting alliance. Parents who were living together were recruited to the study using Qualtrics ESOMAR, an online research panel (n=104 parenting couples). Parents completed a demographic questionnaire as well as the Coparenting Relationship Scale, a measure of the coparenting alliance, the Dyadic Reflective Function Scale, a measure of couple's reflective function, and the Brief Dyadic Adjustment Scale, a shortened version of a measure of marital/romantic quality. The reflective function was found to be directly related to all positive relationship indexes and inversely related to all negative relationship indexes, and was most robustly inversely linked to parental conflict. Marital status and the number of children moderated these relationships. A surprising finding that contradicted current research was that the male reflective function was more influential to the overall coparenting relationship and marital relationship than the female reflective function. Treatments to improve the coparenting reflective function, such as Mentalization Based Treatment - Parenting Together, can be incorporated into other existing coparenting interventions to improve treatment outcomes.
