Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2007.
The dissertation describes and analyzes the history of the "General Inventory," an ambitious public survey of the entirety of France's ancient art and architecture. Since the survey was created (1964), state decentralization and soaring regional power, middle-class and urban expansion, a booming tourist industry and proliferating cultural identities have all profoundly altered the material and symbolic conditions of existence of the French state and nation. What remains, in this context, of the historical and aesthetic categories with which public agencies have been traditionally managing the French nation's capital of "ancient monuments"? This study critically examines the hypothesis of "post-national" policies of memory and collective identity in a context of radical social change. After placing the genesis of the General Inventory in the long-term history of cultural capitalization in Western culture, a combination of interpretive and comparative historical methods is used to contrast and analyze surveying practices at both ends of the General Inventory's life course (1964-2004). The study shows that the forms, functions and contents of official memory have changed drastically in the most recent period. Recorded objects have diversified to include ethnographic material, vernacular architecture, and urban ensembles. The units of analysis have become local rather than only national, and spatial rather than merely architectural or artistic. Functions have also changed from purely documentary to policy-oriented. These transformations invite a reflection on the present and future of state and nation as legitimate levels of political action and cultural identification. The study shows that the national capital of historic landmarks is made today of overlapping cultural territories, national and local, rather than of a collection of "great monuments," and that cultural capitalization has become a technology of space production rather than a technology of pure symbolic accumulation.
