The aim of this study is to find, test, and quantify measurable connections between temperament and key. The graphical methods of Exploratory Data Analysis and computational tools are applied to examine well-temperament's effect on stylistic interval selection as a function of key in the minor-mode fugues of J. S. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I (1722). Analysis compares interval distributions across fugues, with the objective of determining if differences align with the disparate key groups and subgroups defined by the preceding Pythagorean and meantone tuning systems, which are embedded in the intervallic key structure of well-temperament. Necessary to achieving the thesis's primary goal are the subsidiary goals of graphically presenting the generic key organization of well-temperament, and the creation of a computational framework.Analysis is executed and made precise through a computational framework expanding upon the Python toolkits of music21, pandas, and seaborn. Successful application of the framework demonstrates the usefulness that computational methods have upon revealing patterns would otherwise be unavailable to analysis through the means of manual score searching alone. Importantly, a computational approach to analyzing temperament also provides a necessary dimension of quantifiability to formalize the relationship between temperament and key, introduce the element of objectivity to validating historical and theoretical statements, and extend discourse of the subject to a wider and more diverse audience.The results of the study offer strong evidence that temperament exerts a measurable effect on Bach's stylistic choice of interval given key, mirroring historical traditions of interval prevalence set forth by the Pythagorean and meantone tuning systems, as well as tendency for featuring idiosyncratic intervals in thematically important positions according to expectations dictated by these historical key groups and subgroups. This is observed on all levels of the tested scope. Intermediately, this thesis also provides a valuable example of how graphical tools can help develop a better understanding towards well-temperament and its key categories and subcategories. Lastly, the efficacy of the computational framework is confirmed through proof of concept, which validates the software's usability for future computational projects.
