The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand U.S. Department of the Army civilian scientists' experiences in performing their assigned tasks. The constructivist grounded theory design was the approach used to delve into the participants' experiences. Interactive interviews and three levels of coding commenced. Eight participants voluntarily completed face-to-face interviews, and there were 1,565 initial codes produced from the data. The initial codes underwent grouping for commonalities and concepts to form focused codes; these codes underwent further grouping with the analysis to form theoretical codes. Six theoretical codes emerged from the data: negative feelings, negative actions, neutral feelings, neutral actions, positive feelings, and positive actions. The data showed that most of the participating scientists experienced negative feelings and negative actions when performing their assigned tasks due to a lack of resources, funding, and leadership support. The findings also indicated the participants' resilient nature, ability to achieve self-set tasks to counterbalance psychological contract breaches, and maintain motivation and productivity. This study provides practical application opportunities for Army leaders to link employee-related benefits, practices, and policies directly to their personnel's needs and motivations.
