Emergency service personnel are the individuals that are likely to be the first to respond to and assist in various emergency situations. These individuals are trained to deal with a wide variety of potential emergencies, including fires, medical problems, accidents, terrorist attacks, and other critical incidents. The critical incidents and vicarious trauma these providers experience daily and throughout their careers creates a fertile ground for the development of negative emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. It may be concluded that there is no difference between the presence of burnout and vicarious trauma for 9-1-1 telecommunication dispatchers and law enforcement officers. However, there is a difference between the presence of burnout and vicarious trauma for emergency services personnel and firefighters. There is a difference between the presence of burnout and vicarious trauma for novice and veteran emergency services personnel. There are different utilizations among the various emergency service organizations in the utilization of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) programs following a critical incident. Finally, although there are some participants that have not used CISM programs, the majority of all participants viewed these programs as being effective.
