Three coastal structure response models were evaluated: event-based (EB2), peaks response-based (RB1), and time-series response-based (RB3). RB3 carries multivariate uncertainties throughout the model. RB1 assumes that the intra-storm peak water level and wave height occurs simultaneously. EB2 carries these uncertainties through the storm parameters, but computes structure response at an "event". EB2 is the current state-of-practice in coastal structure design.The three models were compared using storm data from Melby et al. (2021). Analysis locations capture a variety of storm exposures. Overtopping was calculated at three crest elevations for floodwalls, levees with 1:3 slope, and levees with 1:6 slope.RB1 and EB2 models were evaluated against RB3. Performance metrics and scores showed that EB2 was not accurate and showed no predictive capabilities within any frequency response range. RB1 was accurate for mid and low frequency response ranges, even under the wide range of structure geometries and storm exposures.
