This thesis describes a study of wave influenced coastal erosion and sediment deposition around volcanic islands in the Azores Archipelago, combining methods of marine geophysics (high resolution bathymetric and seismic data), marine geology (sediment samples), coastal morphology (rock compressive strength), physical oceanography (wave properties), remote sensing (satellite images and LiDAR) and numerical modelling. Four major results have been found:First, by studying the post-eruptive evolution of Capelinhos volcano (Faial Island) which erupted in 1957/58, coastal retreat rates were found to decrease rapidly with time after the eruption, approximately following an inverse power law relationship with coastal retreat distance. This relationship is partly due to the development of submarine platforms created by the erosion, which attenuate waves approaching the coasts, slowing down further erosion. Other factors considered include rock resistance, local wave conditions, and cliff protection by eroded materials. Second, a simple model was developed that predicts how wave heights transform across inter-tidal shore platforms. Testing it against field measurements from 23 globally distributed sites, the model was found to work well in cases where wave approach was orthogonal to simple rectilinear coastlines and tidal range was moderate or small. Third, time-averaged erosion rates were estimated from the seaward extents of submarine platforms created by erosion of lava deltas of known age. Those rates for Holocene deltas (<6 ka) were found to vary greatly. The causes of that variability are uncertain but likely include resistance due to varied lava types and wave climate. Fourth, comparing the extent of seabed erosive conditions predicted using a wave model for Santa Maria Island with the pattern of deposition derived from Boomer seismic records, the threshold of motion of carbonate-rich sediments is found to be a factor of 2-3 larger than expected from the formulae for spherical quartz grains.These results should be useful for understanding more broadly how volcanic ocean islands become degraded by erosion, ultimately forming shallow banks and guyots, and how those banks affect waves experienced by adjacent coasts. It should also be useful for practical reasons, such as for assessing cliff stability and for evaluating the sustainability of dredging of shelf sand deposits.
