This research study addressed the question of how postsecondary administrative women described their experiences in developing their leader identities. Predominantly, prior research had focused on how men developed their leader identities; however, little research had been done on how women developed their leader identities. The case study research method was used and allowed for flexibility in researching a complex topic. The sample group was postsecondary administrative women who held leadership positions within their universities. After coding each of the participant's responses, the data analysis consisted of analyzing each participant's interview and was followed by a cross analysis of all participants' responses. Patterns and themes were determined for each participant first and then for all of the participants, which led to the findings. One of the findings after analyzing the themes was that many of the participants felt their leader identities had resulted from unintentional leadership journeys. This finding demonstrated how the women used their leadership experiences with other life experiences to develop their leader identities, even though being leaders was not one of their goals. Another finding was that the majority of the women had contentment within their current positions and did not desire to move forward in their careers, especially after their experiences in the development of their leader identities. The last finding described the symbols that women used when reflecting on themselves as leaders. They thought of their experiences in becoming and being leaders, which led them to adopt the symbols they provided as representations of their leader identities. This research study enhanced the knowledge of how women developed their leader identities and provided suggestions for future research.
