Research on adult learners is ever evolving, and Knowles (1990) considered them to be a neglected species. Andragogy is the coined term that describes the manner in which adults learn. Adult learners are considered autonomous, experience-driven, and motivated. However, despite the strides made in adult learner literature, there still remain many undiscovered facets of study. One such area is how adult culinary students learn. A mixed method inquiry assessed the usability of a standard recipe versus a standard recipe that simultaneously displays a multimedia version of the same recipe and whether it will increase learner comprehension. Typically, symbols have a simplistic design, are occasionally accompanied by words, and are effective in disseminating meaning. Therefore, the universal utility of symbols within multimedia design and how they impact educational settings is a keen area of interest. This study investigated the usability of multimedia recipe design and how it affects adult culinary learner comprehension.
