The central purpose of this Dissertation in Practice was to understand factors that influence educators' empathy towards their elementary English Learner students in a small school district in South Texas. The study sought to understand practical implications for designing an intervention to support educators facing increasingly diverse students. Four research questions guided this study: What factors influence teachers' empathy toward their elementary dual language and ESL students in a small South Texas school district? How does empathy guide the English Learner educator's teaching and learning in the classroom? How does teachers' cultural awareness impact empathy toward their English Learner students? How do English Learner educators perceive empathy as a motivator to student learning? This study used a phenomenological design and included 12 EL educators with at least one year of experience who participated in one-on-one interviews. This Dissertation in Practice's results indicated that while EL educators are cognizant of the importance of empathy in the learning environment, they face challenges due to the increase in diverse student populations. The study's data suggested that EL educators in the participating district may benefit from additional support in educating EL students based on their unique needs. Furthermore, this study concluded with a comprehensive professional development training series designed to increase EL educators' cultural awareness and competence.
