The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the lives of people all around the world. Millions of individuals have been infected with the virus and 6 million have died as a result of being infected at the two-year mark. Government mandates and health organization guidelines were put into place in an attempt to limit the spread, by delineating health promoting behaviors, such as hand washing, mask wearing, and social distancing. Ultimately, the nonadherence by individuals to these public health guidelines is an important variable to consider when understanding rapid transmission and for identifying potential solutions to reduce the number of individuals exposed to the coronavirus. The present study sought to examine the potential role of risky choice in decision making when choosing to engage in COVID-19 mitigation behaviors through a novel probability discounting task. Participants completed a survey regarding COVID mitigation behaviors followed by the novel probability discounting task. The results were then categorized under vaccination status, political identification, and gender. The results identified a correlation between vaccination status and AUC values as well as between political identification and AUC values. There was no significance found between gender identification and AUC values. Future researchers should focus on the specific probability at which individuals switch to engaging in health behaviors to inform public policy on how risks and benefits are presented across future public health issues.
