This thesis utilizes hermeneutic qualitative research to explore the research question: In what ways is the Neurodiversity Movement creating a paradigm shift in how Autism is perceived and how Autistic individuals are treated in therapy? Neurodiversity views of applied behavior analysis (ABA) treatment, specifically its aim for normalcy and its use of punishment, are examined. Professionals are encouraged to contemplate how therapeutic treatment goals align-or misalign-with the desired outcomes of Autistic clients. A discussion of key concepts of the Neurodiversity Movement includes ableism, functioning labels, stimming, and masking.
