This study explored the impact of family environment on the relationship between stress and psychopathology in a sample of previously institutionalized, internationally adopted adolescents. Participants resided in a variety of institutional settings overseas before coming to live with their adoptive families in the United States. Specifically, certain social-emotionally related aspects of family functioning were hypothesized to moderate the association between current life stress and internalizing or externalizing symptoms. Results revealed significant moderating effects of family cohesion and family conflict on internalizing and externalizing symptoms, respectively, suggesting that certain aspects of the adoptive family climate may be key factors in the clinical psychopathological presentation of this population. Moreover, these results suggest that those professionals who interact with this population in various ways-including educators, adoption agency staff, and mental health providers-must consider and include the family system in their conceptualization, work, and treatment approaches.
