Neuropsychological research documents the role of the frontal lobe and related brain regions in the etiology of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Although the current characterization of this disorder includes a description of three distinct subtypes which differ in terms of functional impairment, little research has sought to investigate the neuropsychological differences among the subtypes. The present studied investigated the neuropsychological differences among the subtypes of ADHD through the use of two tasks designed to assess different aspects of frontal lobe functioning. The performance of 93 ADHD participants and 301 controls on Trails B and a cancellation task was evaluated in terms of errors and completion time, in an effort to uncover performance differences which could contribute to the characterization of the disorder as well as validate the use of these tasks in the diagnostic process. It was hypothesized that the different ADHD subtypes would perform differently on the two tasks, with the inattentive subtype demonstrating deficits related to the dorsolateral cortex region of the brain and the hyperactive/impulsive subtype demonstrating deficits related to the orbitofrontal region. Results did not support this hypothesis as significant performance differences between these two subtypes were not found. However, Trails B performance differences were noted when comparing the inattentive subtype group with a combined group which included the hyperactive/impulsive and combined type subtypes. The question of valid subtype differences is discussed.
