Standard academic practices of reading, writing, and knowledge production embedded in colonial and exclusionary practices prohibit self-reference as a mode to analyze and understand literature. As diversity in the English discipline continues to grow, universities need to rethink what it means to engage and write about literature seriously and understand the significance of such changes for female students of color, like Latinas. Therefore, this paper expands the Counterstory genre rooted in Critical Race Theory and Latino Criticism and aims to demonstrate how traditional academic approaches to literary interpretation can evolve to become more inclusive and meaningful by incorporating life experiences into the analysis of a text. Thus, a counternarrative analysis of Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night redefines what it means to know and discuss a work of literature and models how Latinas can access literature meaningfully through embodied and experiential knowledge, and utilize this to validate and honor themselves while simultaneously satisfying academic expectations.
