STEM education plays a major role in the way female students view STEM careers. Research suggests that female student attitudes towards STEM careers can be positively influenced through the incorporation of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) at the elementary level. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect a STEM based forensics unit has on female student attitudes towards pursuing a STEM career. Ten sixth grade classes ranging from having five to fourteen students each participated in the STEM based forensics unit. Each class period varied in size and make-up. There were a total of 82 students split up into ten different sections. In total there are 45 males and 37 females. The unit consisted of eight inquiry-based lessons. The students completed an engineering design challenge at the end of the unit in which they investigated and solved a crime scene based on evidence. The students were assessed using an attitude survey, lesson activities and a rubric for the engineering design challenge. The results of the study showed little to no change in students' attitudes toward STEM careers. Results for male students' slightly increased while female students' remained the same from pre to posttest. Students' final results did not show a negative effect either supporting the research that the incorporation of STEM in elementary education can influence female students' attitudes toward pursuing a STEM career.
