This research study explored the associate's degree and certificate program completion rates of Blue Collar STEM students who enrolled in a two- year career pathway program offered by community colleges in a Mid-Atlantic state. Over a ten-year period from 1997 to 2007 the attainment of associate's degrees rose on average by 25% while enrollment grew by 18-22% in community colleges. This dissertation examined the progression of African American students through these programs, specifically Blue Collar STEM two-year degree and certificate programs. The research has explored how three factors, race, gender, and geography, have affected the completion of certificates in the Blue Collar STEM Programs at community colleges in a Mid-Atlantic state. The completion data were derived from the Mid-Atlantic Higher Education Commission, the Mid-Atlantic Association of Community Colleges, and IPEDS for the ten-year period. These findings expand our understanding of Blue Collar STEM studies, especially the participation of African American students. The research used a t-test and ANOVA tests to draw conclusions about the three variables and their differences on degree completion in Blue Collar STEM programs. The study results will enable educators to better understand a new occupational trend, the progress of African American students through Blue Collar STEM educational and training programs and their entry into the STEM workforce.
