Gender inequity in the science, technology, and engineering (STEM) fields has been recognized as an ongoing issue. Although several contributing factors have been identified, there is an interest in determining how best to encourage girls to consider pursuing careers in these fields, particularly computer science and physics. This study examines the role that identity and perception plays in the future aspirations of upper elementary students in a large suburban public school. Illustrative and narrative data were collected before and after participation in a program that introduced several female scientists and engineers as possible role models, along with hands-on activities. Analysis of responses suggests themes in the girls' attitudes, confidence, and thoughts about studying STEM subjects in the future.
