A large percentage of musicians, especially violinists, are effected by occupationally related repetitive motion injuries which alter their musical performance. Normal motion of a violinists' upper extremity must be analyzed first to generate a normative data base. Eventually, this normative data can be used to compare to injured violinists' motion. The purpose of this study was to analyze normal, injury free violinist's bow arm motion to establish a data base using video motion analysis techniques. Nine uninjured professional female violinists right arm full bow motion was video taped playing a simple musical passage. The violinists had a right elbow angle range of 35.6 to 96.5 degrees of motion. The correlation between the vertical displacement of the lateral epicondyle as related to the maximum bow arm excursion and the excessive flexion. (r = −.70, p = .03) (r = .71, p = .03), was most significant. Further studies are needed to understand the complex nature of bow arm movement in violinists.
