How engaged families are in their children's lives, whether at home or in school, predicts child success in school and in life. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to identify activities, opportunities, and barriers to engaging families within Wayne County, Michigan for children and their families with and without Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), geared toward identifying potential approaches in improving family engagement for prekindergarten and kindergarten in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic through family survey and interviews. The Measure of Family, School, and Community Partnerships was distributed to families of children in prekindergarten and kindergarten throughout Wayne County and completed by families in 17 of the county's 33 school districts. Nine virtual semi-structured interviews with Wayne County families were conducted, which included three parents of children without IEPs and six parents of children with IEPs. Several themes emerged through the mixed-methods study, including the importance of developing social skills and socialization in the wake of the COVID-19 global pandemic, home-to-school communication challenges and opportunities, and implications for improvement of supports for families of children with IEPs. Potential considerations are included for program improvement, as well as implications to further expand on concerns relative to improving outcomes for both children and families.
