Jean-Etienne Liotard (1702-1789), a successful portraitist famous throughout Europe during his lifetime, has only recently been awarded a place in the canon of eighteenth-century art. Born in Geneva, trained in Paris, and profoundly altered by his experiences during a five-year stay in Constantinople, Liotard remains somewhat of an enigma today. This dissertation discovers the core tenet of Liotard's artistic project in the notion that a kind of natural vision could be recovered by forsaking techniques of looking induced by "civilizing the eye." The study traces Liotard's hitherto unexplored intellectual relationship to his fellow Genevan Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and argues that ideas about nature and civilization expressed in Rousseau's writings offered Liotard a guide for his return to a primordial state of perception. The dissertation forms part of a larger current in recent scholarship to question inherited conceptions about the "Age of Enlightenment." Its art-historical perspective contributes to a critical reassessment of the Enlightenment's central project of erecting a rational self-conscious subject.
