Background: Narrative analysis is an important form of clinical assessment. While existing measures analyze the accuracy, completeness, and/or coherence (e.g., inclusion of story grammar components) in narrative productions, no single measure captures all three variables. Furthermore, no tool quantifies the degree to which the ideas within narrative productions are logical sequenced (order), which is often a deficit individuals with Cognitive Communication Disorders (CCDs). Thus, new measures with strong normative data are needed.Aims: The aims of this study are 1) to provide normative data on a combined measure of narrative accuracy, completeness, and orderliness as well as measures of story grammar complexity, and 2) to provide preliminary construct validity evidence based on expected declines in the scores of older, neurologically healthy adults on each measure. Methods: Transcripts of Cinderella narratives for 92 healthy control participants, stratified across four age brackets (20-39; 40-59; 60-79; 80+ years), were downloaded from the online database, AphasiaBank. Coding secondary to Richardson and Dalton's (2016) main concept analysis (i.e., inclusion, accuracy, and completeness of essential content elements) measured order, order in conjunction with main concept scoring (MC + order), and inclusion and complexity of episodic story grammar components (i.e., initiating events, attempts, direct consequences). Results: Descriptive statistics provide normative data for order, MC + order, and inclusion and complexity of story grammar components. As hypothesized, the younger two age brackets had significantly higher scores than the older two. Conclusions: The present study offers a novel multi-level analysis of narratives, including order and inclusion and complexity of story grammar components. These combined analyses efficiently assess narrative production in healthy controls, with preliminary validity evidence supporting their use to measure age-related changes in narrative accuracy, completeness, and orderliness. Normative data provides a foundation for future research and clinical assessment aimed at quantifying narrative quality in individuals with CCDs.
