Advances in medical technology are resulting on longer life spans. When combined with the population of baby boomers, the growth of our aging population is outpacing that of younger generations. Our aging population faces a myriad of life course experiences across financial health, physical health, housing, and social support. Lack of awareness and preparation may result in an unnecessary compromised quality of life, or worse-a crisis for which there is no plan. There is limited information about the holistic planning process conducted by aging individuals or family members. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore the levels of awareness of the need to plan as well as actions taken to plan for aging. This study also explored shifts in awareness and action as affected by age, caregiving experience, and life course events and crises. The sample population was divided into three age cohorts: ages 40-55, 56-60 and 70+. Participants were found by public solicitation on an online community bulletin board, personal invitation, and snowball sampling. Five participants from each age cohort were selected totaling 15 research participants. Common themes such as experience as a caregiver, indecision, and perspective of current and future-self emerged across each age cohort. Findings identified common traits also across each age cohort. These traits include the human condition is grounded in optimism, there is a desire for independence and events are the primary trigger of action or reaction. Further research into the awareness, willingness, and ability of adult children to provide care for aging family members, which members of a family initiates planning, and the degree to which families engage in advance care planning is merited.
