Many aspects of narratives will influence readers' perspective-taking. Empirical investigations of narrative perspective have been limited to manipulations of grammatical person - comparisons of readers' processing of stories written from the first- and third-person. In contrast, literary scholars' understanding of narrative perspective and how it affects readers' interpretation of narratives is quite sophisticated. However, many of the factors that are believed to influence reader's perspective-taking lack empirical support. Once such factor is narrative focalization - a literary technique employed by authors to communicate perceptions of story events. In the current study, we examined the role of focalization on readers' perspective-taking. Additionally, we examine how focalization interacts with grammatical person. Across four experiments we provide evidence that readers are more likely to adopt the perspective of the protagonist upon reading internally focalized stories than externally focalized stories regardless of whether stories were framed in the first- or third-person perspective. Readers' perspective-taking appears to be influenced not only by salient aspects of text, but also by some of the more nuanced aspects of narratives used by authors to communicate the perspectives of characters.
