Morbidity and mortality related to cardiovascular disease (CVD) among African American men (AAM) in the U.S. surpasses that of all cancers combined (AHA, 2019). AAM in Jackson, Mississippi, have the highest prevalence of cardiac disease and mortality in the United States compared to Caucasian men (MSHD, 2017). Yet, CVD and the health beliefs of AAM remain understudied. The researcher conducted a quantitative cross-sectional secondary analysis study using a sample of 1,926 AAM who resided in Jackson, Mississippi. This study was conducted to examine the relationship among individually reported health perceptions, CVD, and CVD risk factors of AAM after adjusting for age, health insurance status, and socioeconomic status. The Health Belief Model was the conceptual framework that guided this study, which used the constructs of perceived seriousness, perceived susceptibility, and perceived barriers. Pearson, Spearman, and partial correlations were used for secondary analysis of archival data taken from Exam 1 (2000 - 2004) of the Jackson Heart Study. Descriptive statistics were used to describe demographic variables of the study respondents. Findings indicated AAM rated perceptions of health as fair to poor when diagnosed with CVD and some CVD risk factors, such as hypertension and smoking. Age, health insurance status, and socioeconomic status were not influential barriers that indicated fair to poor health perceptions. The study did not support the notion that participants with diabetes and a family history of CVD risk factor variables rated their health as fair to poor.
