Divorce is a common event in the United States, with a 2018 reported national rate of 10.9%. At the same time, it is increasingly likely that individuals in the United States will have one or more siblings, rather than experiencing only-childhood. This dissertation sought to investigate the current literature and clinical practices addressing the impact of parental divorce on the sibling relationship. While there is growing evidence that parental divorce has an impact on sibling relationships, there has been little empirical investigation into methods of fostering and sustaining a positive relationship between siblings following a parental divorce. It is essential for professionals to identify interventions that will help parents in the process of separation or divorce to safeguard the relationship between their children. This includes modeling behavior both during and after the divorce that helps siblings maintain positive relationships. The findings of this dissertation were disseminated via professional presentation with the goal of assisting mental health practitioners working with parents and families experiencing a divorce.
