For decades, scholars have investigated the correlates of support for European integration. Historically, integration has taken place through two specific processes-"broadening" (or enlargement) versus "deepening" (or EU institutional development). Yet, many scholars choose outcome variables that conflate the two. In this dissertation, I conceptually distinguish between both processes and then investigate the correlates of support for broadened versus deepened integration. I achieve three major contributions. The first involves a theoretical contribution. I emphasize the importance of decoupling support for integration into its two historical forms. I provide exploratory factor analysis results that demonstrate how support for either process lies on different dimensions. I use a lesser known original outcome variable from the literature to capture support for deepening, measured as support for increased policy delegation at the EU level. I create my own original outcome variable from a battery of Eurobarometer questions to measure support for broadening. Second, I demonstrate that when these processes are decoupled, we find interesting and unexpected results for our correlates. Finally, I identify several issues with how scholars conceptualize and operationalize support for integration. I provide some ideas for future research to tackle these problems. I emphasize why causation is so crucial to the development of this literature versus relying on correlation and propose a survey experiment that could be implemented to look at how perceived cultural and economic dissimilarity of a potential member state might affect support for broadening.
