The concept of green, ecological and sustainable city has become the core issue of urban development worldwide. And how to achieve ecological goals in urban existing communities' renewal is a more challenging and important topic. In recent years, with the urban sprawl worldwide, existing urban communities are unable to meet the needs of residents due to poor space qualities and high energy consumption. Moreover, many existing communities urgently need to be regenerated in China. An ecological assessment system can significantly enhance the efficiency of existing communities' renewal. As a scientific tool, the ecological performance assessment system can improve management indicators based on statistical information for the future impact of relevant decision-making and efficiency in urban ecology. However, research on community ecological assessment systems is relatively scarce. And the existing community ecological assessment systems often lack integrated consideration of community sustainability. To scientifically guide the renewal of existing communities, this thesis derives the key indicators for the existing community ecological performance evaluation based on comparing typical evaluation index systems and Eco-cities worldwide, including American LEED-ND, British BREEAM Communities, Japanese CASBEE UD, German DGNB, Australian Green Star- Communities, and Chinese assessment standard for green eco-district. According to the analogism method, this thesis also takes Eco-cities as examples, i.e. Tianjin Sino Singapore Eco-City, Tangshan Bay Eco-city, Sweden Hammarby Sjostad, and Abu Dhabi Masdar City. Then, the framework of the evaluation systems, the composition of specific indexes, and the weight of these indexes are investigated to form an ecological performance evaluation for existing urban communities. Then, this thesis constructs an integrated assessment indicator system in the view of existing communities in Shanghai that includes four layers and eight dimensions: land utilization, ecological environment, resource and carbon emission, green transportation, green building, industry and economy, informatization management, improvement, and innovation. A new hybrid evaluation method is proposed to evaluate community ecology. The Delphi method is used to select indicators and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method is used for weight distribution, thus making full use of their respective advantages. On this basis, the ecological performance assessment system in the regeneration of existing communities is established to comprehensively evaluated the sustainability of a community and guide the ecological regeneration of existing communities. The results show the level of the overall ecology of the existing community, to effectively guide the ecological regeneration of urban existing communities. With the ecological performance evaluation system as the guiding principle, this thesis selects one workers' new village type existing communities in Shanghai as an example and puts forward adaptive new technologies and ecological regeneration strategies. And finally, through renewal design, we will regenerate the existing urban communities into a super sustainable block to meet the characteristics of low-carbon emissions, low energy consumption, and self-sufficiency. Simultaneously, this study suggests a scientific and efficient implementation roadmap for the ecological regeneration of existing communities in China for the future. The conclusion of this study offers references for the ecological regeneration of existing urban communities.
