There are now over 100 million American adults, as well as up to one-third of all young people under the age of eighteen, burdened with chronic pain in the United States. Beyond physical pain, individuals with chronic pain are susceptible to developing depressive and anxiety disorders. With a shortage of psychologists equipped to manage pain, and the necessity to address the global pain epidemic, it is evident that more psychologists need training in pain management. Yet psychology graduate students often have little to no exposure to pain management. To try to address this gap in training, this researcher developed a brief, engaging readily available and, level-appropriate pain management didactic for graduate students. Early exposure to a pain-focused didactic could be an effective way to provide foundational knowledge at a crucial stage in training where students are still deciding on a specialty area. This dissertation focuses on the formal evaluation of a didactic addressing the role of psychology in the treatment of chronic pain and the neurophysiological explanation about the body mechanisms that lead to pain. A small group of psychologists, physicians, physiotherapists, and psychology instructors evaluated the multimedia pain management didactic, with analyses showing unanimous support for its clarity, accuracy, appropriateness of content, and potential effectiveness for psychology training. When disseminated, this didactic could help supplement training in clinical psychology, encourage more graduate students to consider further training in the treatment of pain, and subsequently improve outcomes for individuals with chronic pain.
