The purpose of this research is to examine emerging threats and benefits posed to the telecommunications sector with the introduction and expansion of fifth generation (5G) technology. The introduction of 5G represents an evolutionary expansion of existing technology and is recognized as representing a paradigm shift to the Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMNs). This research focused upon the architectural aspects of 5G, as well as the importance and risks of artificial intelligence (AI), emerging cyber threats, and mitigation strategies to address such threats. Findings revealed that with the benefits of 5G technology that include significantly enhanced speeds, low latency, improved connectivity, applications in virtual environments, expanded bandwidth, and network slicing, that the potential for improving the overall quality of life for the global community is immense. This research also revealed a variety of new cybersecurity threats will emerge. Significantly faster speeds, coupled with integration of IoT devices, many of which suffer from even basic cybersecurity standards, will present a variety of cybersecurity problems. This expansive attack surface provides cybercriminals the capability to attack entire networks, and the decentralized nature of 5G presents significantly more routing points, all of which need to be monitored for optimum security protection. The immense amount of data created by 5G networks makes the detection of anomalies in cyberattacks behaviors more difficult. The evolution of 5G technology is eagerly anticipated. It is still in the early stages of expansion, which affords manufacturers and developers time to prioritize security. Innovative thinking today will be integral in addressing cybersecurity issues in the future.
