Although many studies have examined how international students use social media and other communication channels such as face-to-face, little is known about the medium that international students find more gratifying to meet their needs. This study examined the communication channel -social media and other communication channels such as face-to-face- that international students in the United States find more gratifying to meet their needs. College students' (N = 89) were surveyed about the purposes for which they use social media. Using the Uses and Gratifications Theory, five purposes were identified; to make friends (with students from their home countries and domestic students), for educational purposes, for social support and to keep in touch with friends and family in their home countries. Participants were asked to rate how social media and "other communication channels" help them to meet these needs. The results of the study showed that international students find "other communication channels" (face-to-face, video chats, emails, letters, text messaging, phone calls) to be more gratifying to make friends with students from their home countries and domestic students, for educational purposes and for social support. However, no significant difference was found between social media and "other communication channels" for the purpose of keeping in touch with friends and families in their home countries. The implications of these results are discussed.
