Art therapists have emphasized the importance of personal art-making (Allen, 1992; Arrington, 2001; Ault, 1994; Cahn, 2000; Huntoon as cited in Wix, 2000; Jones, 1983; Lachman-Chapin, et al., 1998; Malchiodi, 1999; McNiff, 2019; Moon, 2002; Phillips, 2016; Wix, 2010). This research study adopted a dialectical aesthetic intersubjective worldview (Gerber, 2016b). The study explored art therapists' use of personal art-making to understand relationships that might exist between personal art-making practices and professional art therapy work. The study was conducted through open-ended in-depth interviews with three professional art therapists and employed a qualitative thematic analysis of the interview data. Relational theory served as a guiding principle for this qualitative, thematic analysis of art therapists' experience of and relationship with personal art-making. Art therapists identified environmental factors, materials, the art-making process, and purposes for creating art as influential factors in their personal art-making throughout this study.
