College athletes are seen as leaders on campus and develop leadership qualities during their participation in sports. Empirical evidence is limited and mixed regarding whether experiences as a student-athlete have an effect on leadership development. In response to the need for formal leadership programs in athletics, leaders at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) used the Social Change Model (SCM) of Leadership Development as a framework for developing the leadership capacity and leadership efficacy of student-athletes via participation in the Student-Athlete Leadership Society (SALS). The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of a leadership development program based on the SCM on student-athletes' leadership capacity and leadership efficacy. A multi-instrument online survey with the addition of a background questionnaire to collect demographic and leadership background information about the participants was used. The Socially Responsible Leadership Scale (SRLS-R2) was used to measure leadership capacity and the Leadership Self-Efficacy Scale (LSES) was used to measure leadership efficacy. Findings showed there was no significance in leadership efficacy and leadership capacity between SALS graduates and non-SALS student-athletes due to varying prior leadership experiences. Student-athletes gain leadership capacity and leadership efficacy through formal leadership programs in athletics but student-athletes are students first and can improve their capacity and leadership efficacy in other outside of sport activities and involvements.
