This qualitative phenomenological research study examined the lived experiences of undergraduate and graduate sport management students. It was designed to understand the social factors that sport management students encounter when considering to participate in practical learning experiences. The purpose of this study was to investigate how mentorship impacts other motivational factors to participate in experiential learning environments so that student engagement in practical learning experiences could be improved. Dewey's experiential learning theory provided the theoretical framework for this study. The participants included 11 sport management students enrolled in a historically black college or university in the Mid-Atlantic region. Three research questions were addressed in this study. The first question looked at motivational factors that drive student participation in experiential learning activities, the second question looked at how mentorship influences students' motivation, and the third question looked at how student perceptions of practical learning activities impact motivations to participate in experiential learning. Data was collected virtually via one-on-one semi-structured interviews with 11 participants. The results of this study show that personal interest in the sport industry coupled with the opportunity for career, academic, and personal development drive participation in practical learning activities; that students value faculty mentors who make a personal connection with their students while offering guidance, wisdom, practical learning opportunities, networking opportunities, career preparation, challenges, and skill development; and that students assess the perceived costs against the perceived benefits of participation in practical learning experiences. Recommendations for future research should explore how mentors shape student perceptions of practical learning experiences so that a variety of experiential learning opportunities might be better positioned in front of sport management students.
