The purpose of this mixed methods study was to understand parents' motivating factors and parenting practices that influenced the continuation of instrumental music participation throughout a child's high school career. This research sought to identify the impact of instrumental music on student musicians from the parents' perspective and distinguish any nonmusical effects associated with instrumental music. In order to achieve this overall objective, the following research questions framed this mixed methods study: 1.What are parents' motivating factors influencing children's participation in an instrumental music program? 2.How do parents support their children's participation in an instrumental music program? 3.To what degree does instrumental music impact a child's academic achievement, self-confidence peer relationships, and executive functioning skills from the parent's perspective? This mixed methods study gathered data from parents of rising high school seniors or recent graduates who participated in instrumental music throughout high school. Using a survey, interviews, and focus groups, parents' perspectives about their child's experience with instrumental music participation were explored. The study concluded that instrumental music participation is associated with many nonmusical benefits. Furthermore, parents play a critical role in supporting a child's music participation to ensure that children experience such benefits. The study found that 1) the social benefits of instrumental music participation emerged as the most impactful role of all motivating factors studied, 2) personal support provided by parents is necessary for continued instrumental music participation but must be met with child acceptance, and 3) from the parents' perspective, instrumental music affects children's academic achievement, self-confidence, peer relationships, and executive functioning skills, but some effects were found to be more notable than others. Additionally, this study provided recommendations for educators, parents, and future researchers who seek to further explore the influential factors in a child's continued involvement with instrumental music participation. Moreover, by studying the motivating factors and parenting practices that influence a child's persistence with instrumental music, this study 1) advanced research on the social-emotional impact of instrumental music participation, and 2) contributed to the limited previously conducted research that examined the role of parents in children's musical development. Though this study focused on the perceptions of parents, the results of this research contributed to the small existing body of research seeking to understand the nonmusical benefits of music, especially in the social-emotional domain.
