While several studies indicate that group diversity has positive effects on performance outcomes in sport, some studies found no significant impact, or even a negative impact, of cultural diversity on team performance. Furthermore, barriers to communication can cause team performance to decline. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to examine the effects of diversity on team performance in women's college basketball. More specifically, race, language, and geographic origin effects on performance are examined. In an increasingly globalized world, diversity in teams continues to grow. Several studies indicate that group diversity has positive effects on performance outcomes for sports teams. However, some studies concluded that there is either no significant impact on team performance or even a negative effect resulting from cultural diversity. Furthermore, barriers to communication can be a factor causing team performance to decline. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the effects of diversity on team performance. More specifically, factors such as race of team members, geographic origin of team members, and the dominant language in the geographic areas team members are from. To examine a variety of diverse teams with similar structures, goals, and performance metrics, women's college basketball teams will be analyzed using multiple regression. While the independent variable will consist of indicator variables representing various forms of cultural diversity and communication barriers (e.g., race and language), the dependent variable will be team winning percentage.
