This is a portfolio of twelve original compositions. It aims to illustrate an approach of colour blending/building that draws its inspiration from the potentials of the human voice. Each of the pieces explores the way this colour-driven approach is being accessed under a different setting. Hybrid colours are formed by blending words and selected speech sounds (consonants in particular) with both western and non-western instruments, bringing along subtle timbral modifications (and special panning/echoing effects) as the music proceeds. These can be seen in "A Story From... the Other Side of the Horizon", "Cut Grass", "Episodes..."," Star Talks", and "On that Unforgettable Day... ", where both the instruments themselves (violin, dongxiao, zheng etc.), and the practice of 'singing while playing', were put under experimentation. On the other hand, handbells and handchimes are given a special place in this portfolio. With their powerful ringing and sustaining qualities, these rare members have introduced a whole range of new possibilities in expanding and extending the sound of the conventional ensemble. "Whispering Voice Beyond the Horizon" demonstrates how they are closely akin to the amplified human voices. " Rite of Dragon" depicts the way they serve to 'improve' (by softening) the shrilling qualities of the tam-tam and the singing bowl. "The Nether World" works the other way round, challenging the flute and the alto flute with their potentials to enhance the mellow qualities of the lower ends of the handbells and handchimes. Behind all these, it is initially an attempt of re-conceiving the role of the human voice that defines the approach of this portfolio. "Via Dolorosa ", which is among the earliest works of the set, signifies a clear focus and consistent effort in experimenting with the use of non-sensible syllables, in an attempt of turning what used to be considered as a solo singer into a member of the instrumental ensemble. " The Elf of Autumn" is an attempt that furthers such an idea. Along this line of exploration, "Lullaby", an A Cappella piece with multiple sub-divisions (positioned on-stage, off-stage, and around the concert hall), is in pursuit of re-conceiving choral writing in orchestral terms. This leads to my final orchestra piece " Vagabond", a colour-driven, and above all, voice-inspired instrumental work.
