The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how individuals describe their self-interest motivations, beliefs and values, and emotional motivations to volunteer either formally or informally in local organizations in a city located in a Southwestern state. The research questions asked how individuals describe their self-interest motivations, their beliefs, and values, and how they described their emotions as motivations related to volunteering formally or informally in organizations. Sources of data included semi-structured interviews and two focus groups. Twenty-two individuals, who all had over one year of volunteer experience, and volunteered for an organization in the state of Arizona, took part in the study. The theoretical foundation for the study was based upon public service motivation (PSM). Braun and Clarke's six-step qualitative analysis procedure was used to identify codes and themes within the qualitative data. The researcher identified six themes: (1) Individuals volunteer because they need to feel connected to others and enjoy working with people, (2) Individuals believe they should volunteer out of loyalty to a certain organization or loyalty to a certain group, (3) Individuals want to help organizations by contributing their formal skills, (4) Individuals volunteer out of a civic responsibility, (5) People experienced personal changes as a result of volunteering, (6) People had positive and negative emotions as a result of volunteering. The findings of this study may help individuals and organizations recruit and retain volunteers. Keywords: Self-interest, Motivations, Formally, Informally, Emotions, Themes.
