Crisis response in schools continues to be an area of necessity. Several different professional groups are involved in the crisis counseling delivery part of a school response. A review of the literature revealed a gap in the involvement of school social workers and their contributions in the delivery of this service. This current research explored the perspectives of school social workers regarding their experiences around crisis response for groups of students and or staff. This exploratory qualitative study was conducted with 13 school social workers with experience responding to crisis in 6th to 12th grade schools. Data were collected through interviews with questions about the following topics:•Experience responding to a crisis•What was most helpful during the response•Social worker preparation for responding to a school crisis•Preparing students and staff for crisis•Evaluation of student's experience of the responseFindings confirmed regular practice of the crisis counseling plan is important. Self-care was identified as the most helpful element for the participating school social workers in the study. Areas for further study include (1) a review of MSW program curriculum covering crisis response and (2) preparation of adolescent students before a crisis by incorporating SEL curriculum in schools to facilitate using common language and reviews of coping skills during a crisis.
