This dissertation draws on Romantic historicism, historical materialism and the philosophy of history to investigate literature's function as a form of historiographic record. I arrange several works of British Romantic fiction to ask how each develops "history within history:" an affective account of the Reign of Terror (1793-4) that exists beneath the written surfaces of conventional historiography. William Wordsworth's The Borderers, Percy Shelley's The Revolt of Islam and Samuel Coleridge's The Fall of Robespierre develop three-dimensional conceptualizations of a moment of revolutionary possibility that is never really over; instead, the Jetztzeit (Walter Benjamin's term for a moment of radical potential) persists as a cluster of competing emotions embedded in the here-and-now. Building from Raymond Williams's claim that social experiences are held "in solution," forming the material makeup of the social present, A Subtler History Within History argues that literature holds "in solution" the affective experience of revolutionary possibility. As processing sites for competing emotions contained within the Terror, each text enlists the historicity of a specific genre to comment on the complex emotional topography of the Reign of Terror and its aftermath.
