This thesis analyzes how computer-generated imagery contained in chaos theory popularizations of the 1980s acts as a source of sublimity. I argue that certain kinds of computer-generated images are laden with affective weight because popular treatises and visual media constructed them as surrogates for the Romantic wilderness, but with complexity of detail standing in for size and power and computer algorithms standing in for God. Due to growing awareness of environmental crisis and degradation in the 1970s and '80s, the Romantics' sublime wilderness increasingly disappeared from the popular imagination, and computer-generated images filled this vacancy. Whereas Romantics of the 18th and 19th centuries made the natural object become a symbol for the supersensible by virtue of its immense size or power, science writers such as the American bestselling science journalist James Gleick made the natural object become a symbol for the supersensible by virtue of its complexity of detail; whereas the Romantic sublime located the supersensible in the power of God, the sublime surrounding fractal geometry located the supersensible in the theoretically infinite power of a computer. Such discourses of computational power and complexity affect how we see CGI today, from cinema and video games to Non-Fungible Tokens.
