In France there is a special genre of popular music called chanson engagee that is explicitly socially and politically engaged. This designation poses questions about the nature of music and politics, for example: what does it mean for a music to be socially and politically engaged? What is it about French culture that gives rise to a politically engaged popular music? To answer these questions this work begins with an analysis of the music and social theories of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Theodor Adorno. These two social, political, and music theorists, who were also musicians and composers, interrogate the role of music and the musical experience in society and politics. Music and political theory shows us that music interacts with people and politics through complex connections of in- and out-group constructions and individual experiences. In France, popular music (including chanson engagee) is uniquely entrenched in the conceptualization of national identity and belonging. It is a space where the politics of national identity and belonging are constructed and contested to the point where genres like chanson and chanson engagee take on mythic status as signifiers for Frenchness. In addition, it is a terrain where those traditionally excluded from the national story can claim their French identity. Musical and lyrical intertextuality within songs throughout time add to a historically dialectical nature of politics and music in France. Through an analysis of popular music and chanson engagee throughout the Fifth Republic, we can better understand the nation's political, cultural, and social struggles to honor its universalist ideals of liberte, egalite, fraternite for all, and potentially provide a more inclusive blueprint for the future.
