This study sought to identify characteristics of maternal identity development in South Asian American women using Josselson's (2011) narrative analysis, a research methodology that relies on multiple listenings and readings of interviews to identify a layered narrative of themes and voices. This methodology is especially useful for this population as it allows personal meaning of identified themes to be derived from the interview material. The theoretical basis for this study is the conceptualizations of maternal identity development by Rubin (1967/1984) and Stern (1998). Seven new mothers and mothers-to-be participated. The participants shared rich narratives of the beginnings of their maternal identities that are grounded in early relationships on one hand, and in the multitude of relationships with self and others on the other. As such, their stories take on a developmental flavor with their experiences of coming into motherhood serving as a platform to further differentiate self from family of origin. In this vein, these participants learn more about themselves in relation to others, as well as their self as mother. This process involves highly agentic and purposeful processes such as breaking cultural and familial "rules" regarding the expression of their thoughts and emotions, as well as establishing new boundaries between their own families and families of origin. The expression of emotion, the use of autonomy and choice, and the development of resiliency emerge as vehicles for development of self and maternal self. These findings can be applied to attachment theory and theories about ethnic, racial, and cultural socialization. Keywords: maternal identity, South Asian American, pregnancy, new mother, motherhood.
